Brooklyn Man, a Dean at Medgar Evers College, Amongst Those Killed in Amtrak Crash

A Brooklyn man identified as Derrick Griffith was a victim in the Amtrak train derailment that killed seven people and injuring at least 200 others Tuesday night.

Officials at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights confirmed on Wednesday that Griffith, 42, dean of student affairs and enrollment management, was one of the seven victims in the train accident.

Griffith was also the founding principal of the City University of New York Preparatory Transitional High School (CUNY prep school), an organization formed to support young people living in high poverty urban communities.

Griffith received a doctorate of philosophy in urban education from the City University of New York Graduate Center this past April.

UPDATE, May 14, 12:00pm: There will be a candlelight vigil and gathering held for Derrick Griffith on Thursday, May 14, at Medgar Evers College, 5:00pm.
