The World Champion Solomon Debate League sealed its spring and summer line-up with the flip of a coin on Wednesday, deciding which teams would debate first in the coming months.
Community Board Chair Tremaine Wright was present at the ceremony, which took place at Boys and Girls High School, as the South African coach, Llewelyn Syce, of Monument Park High School watched via Skype.
Joining the debates this season along with South Africa are Rwanda, Jamaica, Haiti, Brooklyn Collegiate of Brooklyn NY, Boys and Girls High of Brooklyn NY, Cicely Tyson of East Orange NJ, Medgar Evers High School of Brooklyn NY, Bedford Academy of Brooklyn NY, and Christ the King Preparatory School of Newark NJ. The event was hosted by BGHS Principal Michael Wilshire.
"Globalization isn't something that happens out there, it's also taking place in our neighborhoods," said Solomon Debate League Founder Michael White. "With this program we are experiencing change now."
These debates will be held throughout May and June, culminating with the World Leaders Cup, when teams travel from abroad to participate in the 2015 Mind Games, July 8-11, tentatively hosted at Medgar Evers College and Seton Hall University.
