Police have arrested and taken into custody an 18-year-old motorist for fatally striking a pedestrian after fleeing the scene to avoid questioning by police.

According to police, the suspect, Raymond Ramos was driving near Schenectady Avenue and Sterling Place in Crown Heights just after midnight on Monday when he was pulled over by NYPD officers who smelled marijuana coming from his vehicle.

As the officers approached, Ramos pulled off and made it seven blocks before his car collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Nostrand Ave and St. Johns Place, fatally hitting a pedestrian, identified as 21-year-old David Jones, who was walking crossing the street.

Jones was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died of his injuries later that that day, said police. The three people in the second vehicle were taken to the Kings County Hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Ramos was arrested at the scene and is expected to be arraigned on charges of criminally negligent homicide and vehicular assault, according to police and prosecutors. He was later taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition, police said.
