Freeze! ... Now, Go Get Your Weekend: 2/20 - 2/22

Another freezing weekend in New York City. But Brooklyn doesn't stop for old man winter. It's some fun things a gwan in the County of Kings. So button up, wear a hat and remember that a liquor jacket is just imaginary.

Another freezing weekend in New York City. But Brooklyn doesn't stop for old man winter. It's some fun things a gwan in the County of Kings. So button up, wear a hat and remember that a liquor jacket is just imaginary.

With no further ado, here's some of my weekend picks:

FRIDAY

YISSY LIVE-Irondale Center, 85 South Oxford Place (Fort Greene)

Straight out of Cuba, like cigars and top notch baseball players, comes Yissy! Drummer. Band Leader. Party Starter. She's going on a U.S. tour and starting it off right here in Brooklyn

YISSY leads her five member band, which includes stellar DJ el Jigüe, through original compositions using electronic beats and traditional instrumentation. Her take on Jazz, R&B, Soul and Funk will transport you from musical simplicity to complex, virtuous harmonies and rhythms. Close your eyes and you might just slip away to your own balmy paradise just for the evening.

In addition to YISSY and DJ el Jigüe, Jorge Aragón joins on piano, Julio César González is all about that bass, and Julio Rigal solos on trumpet. After the performance is a discussion with YISSY and moderator, Kaisha Johnson, so stick around for that, if you attend.

For more info, hit the event page HERE

Yissy comes from Cuba. You are probably coming from Brooklyn...perfect!

REMEMBERING RODEO CALDONIA-Pillow Cafe, 505 Myrtle Ave (Clinton Hill)

Before Fort Greene became the bastion of families, strollers and dudes from Wisconsin (no disrespect to Wisconsin of course), it was a bastion of young, black creatives. It was the 80s & 90s, and it was Spike Lee, Brandford & Wynton Marsalis, Wesley Snipes, Laurence Fishburne, Rosie Perez, Nelson George, Saul Williams, Eryka Badu ... You get the idea. Rodeo Caldonia was a female, art collective in Fort Greene, which was recently talked about in "Brooklyn Boheme," writer and producer Nelson George's recent HBO Documentary.

It's a talk moderated by writer and cultural critic Greg Tate. It's important! Hit up their FB event page HERE

SATURDAY

CRAZY SINCE THE 90'S-Union Hall. 702 Union Street. 10pm-4am (Park Slope)

This party is all about that 90s music! The Hip-Hop. The R&B. The House and Alternative. 8 to 80, fat, cripple or crazy, get up in there...ok maybe not all those things, but it's truly for everyone, even if you didn't experience the 90s first-hand, dranking some Gin & Juice!

The guest jock is DJ Dirtyfinger, who sounds downright stanky! Expect a good time, with dancing and double fisting of adult beverages. For more information, hit up their FB event page HERE

WEEKEND INSTALLMENT-Installation Market. 733 Franklin Avenue. (Crown Heights)

I just wrote about the opening party for Installation Market, so for cliff notes on what to expect of the market, check my piece here

This Weekend Installment is Saturday & Sunday and is giving you DJs (Tall Paul & Tyga Paw) live performance (Anastasia),  live art (DeliceComics),  food (HoodChef & Lamchops) along with a market of Fleekly curated goods, amazing people and creative energy. Expect to ogle something, be it a human, a handbag or a HoodChef creation. Sat 5-10pm Sun 4-8pm

SUNDAY

URBAN GLASS-Tour Of  "Material Location" Exhibition. 647 Fulton. 2-4pm (Fort Greene)

Tour the exhibition with the curator and artists of the Material Location exhibition, and also visit the Urban Glass studios, where the work from the exhibition was created. Urban Glass is a gem in Fort Greene and definitely an opportunity to experience a process that is not only thousands of years old, but also a process and art form that helped advance society. Before blown glass, people couldn't transport goods very far because there wasn't any jars. Blown glass allowed trading of spices, wine and food.

It was kinda important! Hit up their FB event page HERE

Those are my weekend picks. As usual, I hope you enjoy your weekend and if you're out and about early Thursday night, come check out B-Side, with singer/songwriter/musician Tamar Kali performing live, in-studio. Check out the BK Reader piece about Tamar, HERE

Peace,

Richard
