The Board of Regents refused on Monday to issue renewals for six under-performing New York City charter schools, including New Beginnings Charter School on Lewis Ave and Hart St. in Bed-Stuy, reported Chalkbeat.
The Regents asked Chancellor Carmen Fariña to explain why the city bothered to send up their applications and delayed voting on their approval because they produced lower-than-state-average test scores and/or appeared to be in dire financial straits.
Bedford-Stuyvesant New Beginnings was reviewed and determined to be in a "weak position" to meet its near-term financial obligations because it had only $304,257 in cash to cover more than $1 million in current liabilities.
Staten Island Community Charter School went without a principal for five months during the last school year and experienced a 68 percent turnover of its instructional staff.
"I wouldn't vote to keep most of these schools open, quite honestly," Chancellor Merryl Tisch said at a Board of Regents meeting. "None of them have a track record worth writing home about."
