'I Am Here,' Children's Book Reading and Signing

On Saturday, December 13, from 12:00pm - 2:00pm, celebrated children's books authors Jaqueline Woodson, Renée Watson, Tonya Cherie Hegamin and Zeta Elliot will be at Restoration's Skylight Gallery for a book reading and signing.

The event is part of Restoration's annual RFK Memorial Holiday Party activities, in conjunction with the the Skylight's current photographic exhibit, "I am Here: Girls Reclaiming Safe Spaces," by Delphine Fawundu and Ibi Zoboi.

Zoboi will serve as host of the children's storytime event, where the authors will read from their books, and the discussions will be centered around young girls of color in America, their development and how they view themselves in the context of external forces that play a role in the cultivation of their self-esteem.Screen Shot 2014-12-05 at 10.34.11 AMWoodson, a National Book Award finalist who recently has been in the national spotlight after she penned an eloquent essay in the New York Times about the negative effects a watermelon joke told about her by a good friend,will discuss her book "Brown Girl Dreaming."

Watson will read from her book "Harlem's Little Black Bird," as well as her forthcoming, "This Side of Home;" Hegamin will read from her children's book "Willow;" and Elliot, from her two books-- "A Wish After Midnight," and "The Deep."
