City to invest $140M in Jobs and Manufacturing at Bklyn Navy Yard

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday that the City is investing $140 million to expand manufacturing and create 3,000 jobs at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Crain's reports.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday that the City is investing $140 million to expand manufacturing and create 3,000 jobs at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Crain's reports.

The project is an expansion of Building 77, a World War II-era warehouse currently used for storage. Windows will be added to the lower floors, creating attractive workspace for prospective tenants.

More than 100 prospective tenants have been seeking space in the Navy Yard, but existing tenants will get first dibs on the new space in Building 77 which plans to open its doors by mid- to late 2016.

After that, the Navy Yard's corporation will open it up to those on the wait list.

De Blasio says the expected 3,000 new jobs will expand employment at the Navy Yard by more than 40 percent. City officials compared the investment to the $100 million committed to renovate and redevelop Sunset Park's Brooklyn Army Terminal, which was announced earlier this year.
