Emotions ran high and tempers flared at the Community Board 9 meeting in Crown Heights last Tuesday over a resolution to request a review of the neighborhood's current zoning, reported DNAinfo.
Opponents of the resolution expressed they feared that a review of the current zoning would only open the area up for a possibility of more high-rise towers, once the Department of City Planning finishes its final assessment. They requested a re-vote of the resolution.
However, supporters, expressed the hope that rezoning might generate affordable housing and prevent overdevelopment, pursuant to last year's 55-block rezoning of Crown Heights that allowed for new development on Bedford and Franklin avenues and offered incentives for building affordable units.
After holding a re-vote, the resolution stood with 17 votes against rescinding — including abstentions — and 16 members voting in favor.
