Chokeholds are against NYPD policy, but Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday he stands behind Police Commissioner Bill Bratton's position that opposes making them a crime, reported the NY Post.
"There are some exceptional situations where the life of the officer could truly be in danger and that's where there has to be some flexibility," said de Blasio.
At the same time, he warned that cops who use a chokehold in non-life-threatening situations will face "consequences."
Still, Queens City Councilman Rory Lancman is drafting legislation to make chokeholds illegal, pointing out that cops can defend the use of chokeholds in almost any situation where they may claim their life was in danger.
