Bed-Stuy Crime Blotter: Crime up 8 percent in the 81st Precinct

Crime is down 11 percent for the week of August 4 — August 10, 2014, in the 81st Precinct, covering the eastern half of Bedford-Stuyvesant. According to CompStat , there were 31 total reported incidents in the 81st Pct.

Crime is down 11 percent for the week of August 4 — August 10, 2014, in the 81st Precinct, covering the eastern half of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

According to CompStat, there were 31 total reported incidents in the 81st Pct., compared to 35 incidents during this same week last year. For the 28-day cycle, crime is up 8 percent, with 133 reported incidents, compared to 123 incidents during this same time period in 2013.

And year to date, crime is up 14 percent, with 937 reported incidents, compared to 820 during this same time period last year.

Year to date, there have been five reported murders, compared to four at this same time last year.

The biggest percentage drop in crime so far is seen in the number of felony assaults— an 18 percent decrease— with 188 reported assaults compared to 229 last year. And the biggest percentage jump is in the number of auto thefts— a 92 percent increase— with 75 reported so far this year, compared to 39 last year.

Shots Fired

On Monday, August 11, police responded to shots fired on the corner of MacDonough Street and Howard avenue around 1:30am. Police arrived on the scene to find no one was injured, however, there was damage to a vehicle. A surveillance camera in the area caught image of the shooter, and the detectives are working the case.

Sexual Assault 

On Tuesday August 12, a 13-year-old girl reported an incident of forcible touching Due to the victim's age, her name and the location of the incident are being withheld. Because officers were alerted by the victim's family member, officers were able to locate and arrest the perpetrator.

 Assault

On Thursday, August 14, at around 3:45pm, across from 795 Monroe street, a woman was punched and knocked to the ground by an unknown man. The victim was 6 months pregnant. Officers responded to the assault call to find the woman lying on the ground with her sister standing by her side. Two other officers who were in the area heard the description of the perpetrator and began canvassing the area, reported police. The officers were able to apprehend and arrest a man identified as Mr. Stephens. The victim suffered a concussion and was treated and released.

Shooting

On Sunday, August 17, at around 2:43am, a man was shot on the corner of  VanBuren Street and Lewis Avenue, a 19-year-old man identified as Taekwon Hart, was shot once in the lower abdomen. the victim states that while walking eastbound on Lewis Ave., he encountered 5-6 unknown males. One man shot him and fled eastbound. Hart was taken to the Kings County Hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Shots Fired

On Tuesday, August 19, at around 6:00pm, police responded to shots fired on the corner of Stuyvesant Avenue and Monroe Street. Officers arrived on the scene, canvassed the area and found two shell casing but no one was injured. An investigation led the officers to two men who were arrested, along with the gun case and ammunition. The gun was not recovered, and the investigation is ongoing.
