Although anybody who walks the side streets of Bedford Stuyvesant already knows the community has some of the greenest and most beautiful residential blocks in the borough, it became official yesterday when Macon Street between Howard and Ralph Avenues was declared Brooklyn's Greenest Street of 2014, Gothamist reports.

The distinguished honor was bestowed by Greenbridge, the community environmental horticulture arm of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

For participation, the block scored a perfect 100 percent as every house and tree bed included planters, flowers, vines and whimsical signs promoting the power of gardening.  In total, there were 200 entrants from 33 Brooklyn neighborhoods that were judged on variety, upkeep of street trees, use of color, community participation, and use of native plants.

Bed-Stuy native Serena Icart-Pierre, who has been living on Macon Street for 19 years, told reporters it was her late neighbor, Shirley Bradey, who originally entered the block in the contest, but she took up the torch after she passed away.

"I said, I'm doing it no matter what," Icart-Pierre told Gothamist. "Gardening is an excellent activity. It brings the best out in people. If you can't plant a flower with a smile on your face, you're not a person I want to meet."

Bainbridge Street between Malcolm X Boulevard and Stuyvesant Avenue also did well, tying for second place in the contest and several other Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights blocks were listed as honorable mention.
