The Weeksville Heritage Society's newly constructed multidimensional museum and performing arts space was named the best new building in the city, reported the Wall Street Journal.
The prestigious Municipal Art Society of New York bestowed the top honor on the building, beating out nine other new buildings also honored - seven of which are in Brooklyn.
The Heritage Center honors Weeksville, which existed as its own village, and was one of the country's first free black communities in the 19th Century in what is now Crown Heights. It is located on Buffalo Avenue between Bergen Street and St. Marks Avenue.
The building was designed by Caples Jefferson Architects.
"It's a very low-scale building and you don't really perceive it until you get to it, and then you feel a slight dissonance," architect Everardo Jefferson told the Wall Street Journal. "It coexists with the existing fabric but it is different."
The center will kick off it's first season kicks Sept. 20 with a co-presentation with Creative Time called "Funk, God, Jazz, and Medicine: Black Radical Brooklyn."
"We'll be activating every part of the building, so it will be a test, the first test," Tia Powell Harris, the center's executive director, told the Journal.
