Where in Central Brooklyn straddling Bedford-Stuyvesant and North Crown Heights would you like to see a new food co-op and what types of foods would you like to see being carried there?
These were the types of questions organizers from the non-profit Brooklyn Movement Center (BMC) were asking clients outside the entrance of the city's Human Resources Administration's Job Center at 500 DeKalb Avenue this week.
Brooklyn Movement Center organizer Veralyn Williams and Havir Kaur said the organization wants to start a members only food co-op to collectively improve local food options, make food more affordable and strengthen ties between neighbors. As such they were surveying residents outside the Job Center about their food needs and doing some community organizing at the same time.
Dubbed the Central Brooklyn People's Food Co-op, Williams and Kaur said they hope to have the co-op up and running by early 2016.
