Members of the Bed-Stuy community on Friday celebrated the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela by giving 67+ minutes of community service, a pledge to match Mandela's 67 years of struggle in helping to bring peace, freedom and racial justice to South Africa.

The event was hosted by Boys and Girls High School, Mandela's first stop in the U.S. when he was release from prison in 1990.

The day began at 10:00am with five service projects, including revitalizing the school's garden, cleaning up a vacant lot next to the school and cleaning up Fulton Park, across the street from the school.

There were exercise and training activities for the young participants, including a 67 minute peace walk around the track and field and a large, mural painting installation on the school's building of Nelson Mandela alongside President Barack Obama.
