How many of you have lived in Brooklyn long enough not only to remember but also to have skated at the old Empire Roller Rink in Crown Heights? More than 60 years old, the rink in Central Brooklyn was known across New York City as the true birthplace of roller disco. Yes, by the turn of the Century, the furniture harkened back to the 70s. Yes, it smelled a little like worn socks. And yes, the skates were so old and stiff, you could use them as bookends. But there were very few activities in Brooklyn that were as fun and funny and multigenerational as rollerskating. So in 2007, when the roller rink shuttered like so many others before it (similar to the serial closing of most drive-in theaters), residents were sure it signaled the end of an era.Screen Shot 2014-07-11 at 8.19.01 AM...But hold on. Not so fast! Don't forget we now live in the "new" Brooklyn. And in the "new" Brooklyn, everything old suddenly, magically, once again is made new! Introducing Pier 2 Roller Rink at Brooklyn Bridge Park. This newly opened roller rink is pristine and expansive, designed to accommodate rollerskaters, rollerbladers, hockey players, most anything on pedi-wheels, in a venue that offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline.
