After a bloody weekend in New York City where more than 20 people were shot, City Councilman Jumaane Williams on Monday announced the launch the National Network to Combat Gun Violence, reported The Daily News.

City Council members from more than 20 cities have joined the new nationwide organization. The group plans to discuss local programs to reduce gun violence and ways to lobby for tougher gun laws.

Williams, one of the chief advocates of curtailing NYPD stop-and-frisk tactics, insisted the spike in shootings had nothing to do with reining in stop-and-frisk.

"Even if it did work, we as a society have said that the Constitution means something, and that we do not want to live in a police state," he said.
