At least eight people were injured early Friday morning when a garbage truck collided into the side of a deli on Bedford and Dekalb avenues in Bed-Stuy.
The accident happened at around 2:13am when a Metropolitan Recycling truck traveling westbound on Dekalb Avenue ran a red light and sideswiped a black Volkswagen sedan traveling northbound on Bedford Avenue, according to police.
The truck attempted to swerve away from the sedan and pummeled head-on into Gourmet Deli, located at 944 Bedford Avenue.
At least eight people were taken to Woodhull, Brooklyn and Kings County Hospitals with non life-threatening injuries, said police. Both drivers of the vehicles that collided are in good condition.
Reportedly two people were inside the deli at the time of the accident, but none were standing near the wall where the demotion occurred and suffered only minor injuries.
The deli and its occupants upstairs and next door have been evacuated until the Department of Buildings is determining whether either building is safe or habitable.
Traffic in both directions across Dekalb and up Bedford avenues have been impacted, for about a mile in each direction as all cars are being steered up Bedford at the intersection.
The accident is under investigation.
