City Council Asks State to Let NYC Set its Own Speed Limit to 25 mph

The New York City Council on Wednesday passed a "home rule" measure by a vote of 38-2 (eleven members did not vote), asking the state Legislature for the authority to lower the speed limit to 25 m.p.h.

Currently, the speed limit is decided by the state and on is 30 mph on most non-highway streets in the city.

The initiative is part of the mayor's Vision Zero initiative to improve traffic safety and reduce pedestrian deaths.
