Earlier this year, the city announced that the Brooklyn Greenway-- the 14-mile landscaped route for pedestrians, runners and cyclists connecting open spaces from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge-- would be expanding to add a part of Flushing Avenue that runs along the Navy Yard in Clinton Hill.
Now, the Department of Transportation has announced its own plans for Flushing Ave: to add 5.1 miles of new bike lanes between Clinton Hill and Ridgewood.
Currently, the route stretches from Downtown Brooklyn to Classon Avenue, and proceeds haltingly after that.
But a traffic study showed that, despite heavy use of Flushing Ave by cars and large trucks, the route remains popular for bikers—on weekdays, 1,480 cyclists travel along Flushing, and on weekends, the number swells to 2,519.
The new plan will extend the route past the Navy Yard and delineate the bike paths in both directions in a more fluid fashion through Bed-Stuy and Bushwick.
The new lanes are expected to be painted over the summer, and no parking will be eliminated as a result of the new lanes.
