Screen Shot 2014-06-08 at 6.32.18 AMThis year marks the 25th anniversary of the iconic Spike Lee film, "Do The Right Thing," and to commemorate, Bed-Stuy's Community Board 3 voted Monday to support co-naming the stretch between Lexington and Quincy on Stuyvesant Avenue, "Do The Right Thing Way."

It seems a fitting move, since scenes from the 1989 film were shot on that block.Screen Shot 2014-06-08 at 6.37.01 AMBy Wednesday, the 57-year-old Lee had written about it on his Instagram page: "Great, Great News Today. The City Of New York Has Changed Stuyvesant Street Between Lexington And Quincy In The Brooklyn Hood Of BED-STUY DO OR DIE As Do The Right Thing Way."

But the truth is, the board's recommendation is only advisory, and the name change also must be approved by the City Council.

Councilman Robert Cornegy, Jr., who represents that area of the Bed-Stuy said he would introduce the legislation. But still, it can get complicated, because the City Council's standards for co-naming focus on people and organizations, not on works of art, Cornegy told The Daily News.

"Nevertheless," said Cornegy, "I fully support this effort and will continue to work in every way I can to see the commemoration happen."
