Longtime 81st Pct. Council President Catherine Arline Steps Down, Community Honors

The 81st Pct. will honor Ms. Arline in a special ceremony at the next community council meeting on June 10, acknowledging her longstanding commitment and work in the Bed-Stuy community, where she has lived for the past 65 years.

Catherine Arline is a native of Ahoskie, North Carolina. She attended Hertford County Public Schools and became active in her church, school and community at an early age.

After graduating from high school, she attended St. Augustine's College and graduated with a teaching certificate in sociology and social studies. Soon afterward, in 1959, she moved to Brooklyn, New York.

In 1960, she began her career with the New York City Human Resources Administration. In 1967, she received her Masters of Social Work Degree from Howard University School of Social Work.

Her passion for helping people lead her to a 35-year career in social work with exemplary service, she retired from HRA in 1995. At the same time she was employed as a consultant for the New York State office of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Disability and Substance Abuse.

Ms. Arline is very active in the community, serving in the following roles: Kingsboro Addiction Treatment Center Advisory Board member, New York State Board of Directors for Community Options member, Block Association President, 81st Precinct Community Council President, Founding Board Member and current member of the Board of Directors Neighborhood Housing Services of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Inc. (NHSBS), Active member of Brown Memorial Baptist Church (BMBC), Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Member of Howard University School of Social Work National Alumni Association, St. Augustine's College National Alumni Association member and a member of the local NAACP chapter.

Ms. Arline has served as a board member for the Precinct Council for 47 years and has severed as president for the last 18 years,

Catherine is a paragon in her neighborhood, a good steward and an example of collective work and responsibility. She's especially proud of her work helping in youth development and negotiating needed services for the elderly.

As she retires from her position, the community council wishes to say, "Thank you, Catherine Arline. And God Bless."

The community will honor Ms. Arline at the next 81st Pct. Council meeting, taking place Tuesday, June 10, at 794 Monroe Street, at 7:00pm.
