A request by the New York City Police Department on Tuesday for people to post nice pictures of themselves interacting with NYPD accompanied on Twitter backfiredl when thousands of users posted pictures of alleged police brutality using the department's #myNYPD hashtag, the Daily News reported.

By 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after the NYPD asked for photos,  just over 100,000 people have tweeted about the hashtag, replacing #HappyEarthDay.

At its height, 10,000 people were posting to #myNYPD an hour, and by late Tuesday, it  was the top-trending hashtag on Twitter.

It remained the sixth most popular trend in New York City, underscoring the unfavorable profile the NYPD has among NYC residents currently.

The NYPD said no one will be disciplined for Tuesday's Twitter fiasco. (You think not?)

Sounds like the NYPD may need a dose of PR/image development.
