Mayor Bill De Blasio announced Monday that the July 4 fireworks display would return to the East River this summer, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Macy's department store moved the fireworks celebration to the Hudson River in 2009, where it has remained for the past five years.
But de Blasio, along with a large number of elected officials, has been urging Macy's to move the fireworks back to the East River, providing a better view of the display for residents of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
Macy's agreed and the fireworks will be launched from barges located between the Manhattan Bridge and the South Street Seaport area, with some even launched directly from the Brooklyn Bridge.
