More than 2.1 million homeowners of an eligible 2.7 million have re-registered for the STAR property-tax exemption, with New York City residents lagging the furthest behind, reported the Gannett Albany.

Eligible New York homeowners are required to re-enroll in the basic STAR program by the end of the year, as part of a plan to cut down on fraud in the program.

And so far, only about 78 percent total have registered, according to the state Department of Taxation and Finance.

Of all of the counties to register, New York City homeowners have been the least compliant, with only 62 percent having re-registered.
