A Better Haiti: Empowering Children Through Art Fundraiser was held on Sunday, December 8, at Vodou Bar, located at 95 Halsey Street in Bed-Stuy.

The event was a collaboration between CDi (Community Development International) and Another Haiti, a grassroots initiative by Haitian youth who share a profound love, passion and vision for their country.

Karen Chung, CDi's founder, got involved in the project while working as a nurse in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. Since then, she has returned to the country on her own in support of the children most effected by the disaster.

This past summer Ms. Chung helped organize an art contest for the children in Leogane, Haiti. Hundreds of children between the ages of 10 to 17 lined up long before the school house opened for registration. Due to limited space, paper and crayons, the door had to close after the 100th child was admitted.

With $900 of donation from three New Yorkers, 12 winners each got a school bag, some school supplies, a photocopy of a French dictionary, a voucher to fix their school uniform and $25 cash. But most importantly, some of the winners were able to start school with their money, as education in Haiti is not free.

Ms. Chung then turned the winners' artwork into a calendar. Proceeds from sales of the calendar at Sunday's fundraiser will fund the second annual art contest in August 2014.
